Evaporative cooling has been around for centuries.  The ancient

Egyptians used this form of cooling by placing water saturated cloth sacks

at structure openings, and as the warm air passed through these sacks the water

quickly evaporated and thus caused the cooling process that we know today as

evaporative cooling.  In order to evaporate water, heat (energy) is required.  The

heat comes from the ambient air temperature.  As heat is removed from an object,

the temperature of that object is decreased and in this case, it is the air.

The warmer and drier the air the more moisture it will absorb.

The term "relative humidity" describes the amount of water in the air in relation

to its total capacity.  The lower amount of humidity in the air the more moisture

it is able to absorb.  As air cools, its volume decreases, and with it, 

its ability to absorb moisture decreases.
